Digitize It

by mwkelley

Rippin’ mp3s. Uploadin’ JPGs. Eatin’ ramen. Yeah, it’s one of those days.

Actually, I should say I’m “importing” mp3s. Apparently the term “ripping” is a little too haxx0r for the iTunes set. Still, [Apple] makes a wonderfully painless mp3 encoder. I’ve just been feeding discs to the box all day and pressing Go. I decided the big project this weekend would be digitizing my entire CD collection.

And yeah, you guessed it, this mass conversion is the leading indicator for another big de-stuff-ification scheme. Normally I would just give everything away, but this time I’ve decided to sell all of le stuff on [Ebay]. This is so that I can: A.) learn how to do this, B.) make a little money (maybe), and C.) get my Ebay feedback rating up to, let’s say, double-digits.

I’d probably use Ebay a lot more if I actually knew how to do it. It’s the classic newb double-bind. I don’t know how much it costs to ship stuff, how to pack things so they won’t break, how to list things that are in not so perfect condition. Like these CDs, for instance. Some of them skip on occassion. Almost all of them are caseless (I threw away the booklets and jewelcases during an earlier stuff-purge years ago).

Do people realize that if you’re buying a used CD for $1 + shipping, you can’t expect it to be in just-tore-the-shinkwrap-off condition? Or am I going to get spiked into the dirt with negative feedback? Only one way to find out, I guess.

(ps if [Chris' server] is still behaving, I’ll be uploading all these to the ftp when I’m done. There’s probably be 5 or 6 gigs worth of tunes here, all told.70 or so albums, all genres. I had to obliterate my Linux partition just to make room. So, if you’re reading this and you’re a nodicer, you may want to check the Uploads section of your friendly neighborhood DataHaven later this evening. Or, if you’re not an audiophile, note this: my game CDs are next. Assuming there’s still room in there for a fat stack of ISOs… I’ll have to ask the [sensei]…)
